Our era is one where everything changes at an accelerating speed. This includes the way that students are educated and engineers are trained. Computers, the Internet and Software Applications are the tools that today’s and tomorrow’s engineering professionals shall use to carry-out their duties.

This context of continuously accelerating changes led to the adoption of the “continuing” or “lifelong” learning and therefore the ideal contemporary book addressed to the vocational training should satisfy these new needs. In other words it should bridge and ensure a smooth transition from the era of the book to the era of the software as companion to the book.

This philosophy governs the book series EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT BUILDINGS, volume A of which is presented here. This web edition contains an abridged version of the text of the printed book, aiming to provide a fast and easy reading. For deepening into the various matters discussed, for either professional or educational purposes, it is advisable to study the printed book combined with the use of the holoBIM software.

The choice of the term “HoloBIM” reflects the qualities of the software. The first part “Holo” from the Greek word “Holistic” denotes - symbolises the ability of the software to examine the whole structure within a multitude of contexts such as the design and detailing phases and viewing results in real time using Virtual Reality techniques. The second part, i.e. “BIM” from the three initials of the “Building Information Modelling” process, concerns the unique input of the structure’s data and the ability to extract a multitude of 2D and 3D views, drawings and reports.

For additional useful material one may:

  • • Download 11 drawings of an exemplary study elaborated in several chapters in this Volume Α.
  • • Watch an e-booklet containing 3D stereoscopic construction details.
  • • Watch a sequence of photographs of a real site showing the construction of a reinforced concrete frame from the day that general excavations started up to the completion of the structural frame.

By signing up for a BuildingHow account, one can download the holoBIM software choosing from either the two-year educational license with a limitation to the number of structural members, or the trial one which has all the features of the professional license but is valid for one month only.
